REZENSION: Madeline Miller by The Song of Achilles

author: Madeline Miller
title: The Song of Achilles
publisher: Bloomsbury
publication date: April 12th, 2011

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. Despite their differences, Achilles befriends the shamed prince, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles’s mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, Achilles must go to war in distant Troy and fulfill his destiny. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus goes with him, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

Oh my this book made me cry buckets of tears. Of course I knew the ending before I read it; of course I knew what was going to happen but still this book had me crying so bad. I wasn’t ready for the book to end. I absolutely wasn’t. I read this book in only a couple of days I just couldn’t put it down. The Song of Achilles was the sort of book I kept wanting to last longer. I didn’t want it to end even though I couldn’t stop reading.

I can’t even tell what it was that kept me reading and reading; maybe it was the Iliad story itself, maybe it was the romance and friendship between the two leading characters but maybe it was the lovely and wonderful writing style. I fell in love with the book and the two main characters even though I knew it would kill me and break my heart since there was no way to escape the fatale finale.

There were so many scenes that had my heart swelling and it only made the ending much more unbearable. I’ve always been fascinated by Greek mythology so this might also be a reason why I loved that book so much. I don’t even know what to say or what not to say because this book left me behind speechless. It’s so heartbreaking and sad it will definitely destroy you but its so much worth all that.

The writing style was perfect, the whole plot was amazing and so was watching Patroclus and Achilles grow together like a unit. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read and I would recommend it to anyone. If you haven’t read it yet you should. You should just go online and order it. It is amazing. It really is. This is the sort of book I would love to see be turned into a movie.
