REZENSION: Me Before You by JoJo Moyes

title: Me Before You
author: Jojo Moyes
publisher: Penguin
publication date: January 5th, 2012

I finished this book a while ago but I never felt ready to write a review and I still kind of don’t because everytime I think of this book I just want to cry. I would say that if you don’t want to have your heart shattered into a million pieces don’t read it but then you would miss out on one of the best books I’ve ever read in my life so I’m not gonna suggest you should not read it because everyone should and if you haven’t you should just get up, go to the next book store or just order it online.

It’s been years that one of my closest friends gave me the book for my birthday and I can’t even tell you why I’ve never picked it up. But then when I heard that the movie was coming out soon I knew I had to read the book before the movie hits theatres. Of course I saw people crying over this book, I read comments from people saying that the book left them behind heartbroken, in tears, sobbing, crying, screaming and all but I DID NOT EXPECT THIS.

This book is full of emotions and the story had me hooked from the beginning. The plot is so amazing telling the story of a 26/27 year old young woman named Lou who takes a job as a carer for a man in his mid-thirties who suffers from a very very bad motorcycle accident and has to spend his life sitting in a wheel chair ever since. Does anyone know the movie „Intouchables„? Well this book totally reminded me of the movie and I already loved the movie and adored the book even more. It’s only slightly similar to the movie even though the initial situation is the same but the book is about so much more than a girl taking care of a disabled man. This book is about life and the willingness to live it. We all only get one life, one chance and to say it with Jojo Moyes words „it’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.“

Me Before You isn’t a love story, well maybe it kind of is, but not only. It’s about finding yourself, it’s about seeing the good in life even though everything seems dark and depressing, even though you might think there is no way out because it’s the people around us that make life livable. But the book is also about depressions and suicide which I think is soo important in our society and I am so glad that authors don’t hesitate to pick up such important topics to write about and to make people think about it. While reading the book I always thought about what I would do if I was in Will’s situation. I can totally understand his decision and I would probably tend to do the same thing but I’m not sure if I would in the end because I know it’d kill my family, especially my parents but on the other hand, if I decided to live only because to make them happy I would be unhappy for the rest of my life right? That wouldn’t be right either … so see, this book made me see things differently. I love how this book shows that it’s important to make a choice for yourself.

This story is so beautifully and well written and even though it ripped my heart out and I’m sure I will never ever get over this I love Jojo Moyes for writing this, for reminding me to not take everything in life granted because it could change every day.

But it was not only the story itself that I fell in love with, I also fell in love with the characters from the start. Louisa Clarke is a spirited young woman dressed in the most colorful and weirdest clothes ever. Her family is struggling with money and they are all counting on Louisa to help them out. Her life is kind of boring, she spends most of her time at home, reading, watching TV or watching her boyfriend do his sports but when her boss shuts the cafe down she’s worked at she has to find a new job in order to help her family. This is when she accepts the job as a carer for a disabled man for only six months. It might not be the best job but it’s well payed so of course she takes the job. But what she doesn’t know yet is that this job; that the next six month will change her life completely. Louisa is so much fun to be around. I love that she never tries to be someone else. She’s a ray of sunshine and I just love her. I love her so much and I could relate to her in so many ways.

Also Will … I fell head over heels in love with him the first time he appeared. He’s living a very hard and tough life but as soon as Lou comes into his life he changes, he kind of becomes the guy he was before the accident. He’s charming, good looking, fun, sarcastic and so caring and I hated the fact that whenever he wanted to hold her and be there for her that he couldn’t because he couldn’t move his freaking hands. That made me so mad and sad and cry and I just wanted to scream.

This book is so perfect and overwhelming, it’s amazing but also heartbreaking and I promise you it will ruin your life but it will also make you re-think your own way of living and I can also promise you that even though the book will probably make you cry for years you will love it. You will adore it. This book definitely is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I absolutely can’t wait for the movie because it looks so promising and so good already.
