Okay so I’ve come across some very disgusting stuff on twitter lately and since this isn’t the first time that something like this happened and since I’m tired as hell of all the hate authors get for the books they write, the characters they create, the things they say or whatever I want to get one thing straight: If you dislike a book; a decision an author made concerning the books plot or even if an author kills off your favorite character, is not an excuse to verbally harass them and threaten them with physical violence. IT IS NOT.
Cassandra Clare has always been my favorite author of all time so yes, I do take it very personal when people start threatening her. But this goes way too far!
Cassie has always received a lot of hate and I’m so tired of all this. People keep verbally attacking her for continuing the Shadowhunter Chronicles because they think the only reason she’s doing it is because she wants to make more money from it. What do you even care? Why do you even care? You tell the whole world you don’t like her, so why are you so interested in what she’s doing? These are just assumptions jealous people make; jealous people who KNOW they will never be as good of an author as she is. I’ve met Cassandra Clare once and I swear she is the absolute sweetest and deserves so much better. So you don’t like her? Just leave her be; let her write the books she wants to write because its her decision to make what to write and if she wants to write another 50 books in the Shadowhunter World so be it. You neither have to buy nor to read them; you don’t have to spend any money on her books so why for gods sake do you keep hating on authors you don’t like? Don’t you have better and more meaningful things to do? It’s okay to dislike certain books and authors; there are books and authors I don’t like, that’s just how it is; that’s how it is supposed to be. That is life. But neither do I hate on them, nor do I read their books, talk bad shit about them on social media or even send them death threads or whatever because I’d rather spend my free time reading books and fangirling over things I like than wasting my time on things I don’t like or even hate.
I’ve met quite a few other authors as well and Cassandra Clare is by far one of the most passionate and friendliest authors I’ve ever met. She’s always so happy to meet her fans, she retweets and comments basically everything on twitter, she always talks to her fans at signings, she does not mind taking pictures, she’s more than happy to sign all the books you bring (she even asked me who my favorite character was and when I told her who it was she wrote down his name on the front page of the book as well, right next to her signature), she gladly sits down with booktubers to answer their questions, she even watches fans reviews on youtube or reads them on goodsreads – she already favorited so many of my tweets, retweeted even more of them and every time I checked twitter and saw that she did it again I was on cloud 9.
And now people not only attack her for what she writes, now they even threaten her for killing of a character?
No matter how much you love a character, YOU DO NOT OWN THEM. They aren’t yours; they are the authors; the creaters “babies” so they can do with them whatever they want to do. They can kill them off, they can make them into mean assholes, they can change their hair colors; the authors are in control of EVERYTHING because they created the characters. Of course everyone is allowed to be upset, to be mad, to be sad and heartbroken; you’re also allowed to dislike the books; to write a negative review, to criticize – I mean that’s what this whole book community is about right? To talk books, to discuss them but disagreeing with what happens in a books does not give anyone permission to disrespect and dehumanize an author, to verbally attack them or even threaten them with physical violence. They might be a public figure, but they are still PEOPLE, people like you and me and no one, NO ONE EVER, deserves to be threatened with physical violence for making a decision you do not agree with.
I’ve seen authors have death threats called into signings, I think someone threated Maggie Stiefvater as well only a couple of days/weeks ago on Twitter. I’ve done some research and I’ve even read of an author being physically harmed at an event because they killed a character. This is WRONG. This is just so absolutely wrong.
If you dislike Cassie’s books or she as a person, that is absolutely fine. We are all entitled to our opinions and it’s us who decide who we like and what books we want to read, but those threats for any (book) events are not okay and HAVE TO STOP. Every time I read something like that it breaks my heart. Just imagine one day authors may stop going to such events because they have to be scared for their lives because people keep threatening them for whatever they wrote in their books. Some of them might even stop writing books at all because they are scared that someone who doesn’t like certain things will threaten them again and again and again.
So please NEVER FORGET authors are PEOPLE too and threatening, attacking or hating them is NEVER okay. NEVER. So think about your actions first. Our book community is supposed to be a happy and fun place; don’t make it become such an ugly place.
